A whole home over two floors, and a budget-friendly alternative to a hotel when there are ten of you. Four bedrooms, eight fixed beds and two folding singles, two toilets, a shower, a full kitchen and a washing machine. A heat pump and a wood stove keep it warm.

We will say this plainly: it is an honest older house, not a design hotel. It is professionally cleaned before and after every stay, it has its own entrance, free parking and a garage — and it sits in open, quiet surroundings on the E10, the Arctic road between Narvik, Lofoten and Vesterålen, with the aurora on the doorstep.

On the south-east shore of Tjeldøya looking out over the Ofotfjord: three bedrooms, an open fireplace, a full kitchen, a large terrace facing the water and a bright living room under an open timber roof. Our rowboat and a kayak are here for guests. Tjeldøya has its own marked trail network, “Åtte flotte mål”, and sea fishing off the shore needs no licence at all.

day off.

Evenes Turlag maintains 24 marked trails with summit boxes and more than 150 km of path in this one municipality. These are the ones we point guests to, sorted by how far they are from our door. Times are one way, at a steady pace.

Right outside the door

One trail starts across the road from our door. The Liland trails are a 6-km drive along the E10 — ten minutes.

Snaufjellet, EvenesmarkModerate

The one that starts across the road. Park at the notice board by the ball court in Evenesmark, follow the road up to Fedreheim farm, then a marked and later cairned path to the summit cairn with the Turlag box on it. A rest spot with a fire pit at the treeline; dry, open ground above; the whole airport and fjord laid out when you turn round.

LilandsvetenModerate

The hill above the village, and the view we send everyone to first: Liland, the islands, and the whole Ofotfjord laid out below. Start at the school car park on Liland, up “Langbakken” to the notice board at Stuslåtta, then a well-marked path along the ridge. Bench, lean-to and the summit box at the top. Come back down the cultural trail for the loop.

Liland, HøgdaEasy

A short walk on the asphalt path from Rudolfsletta up to the box at Høgda, by the Lions hut on the county road. 1.06 km, 45 m of climb, entirely on pavement, so a pushchair, wheelchair or walking frame is fine. The one to do on the evening you land.

The moose at Tårstad and Stunes

Not a tour. Just where they are.

Evening drive along the E10, Langvatnet to NautåvatnetBy car

A documented moose migration crosses the E10 between Langvatnet and Nautåvatnet, both sides of the road, and the fields around Tårstad and Stunes are where they come out to graze. Best in the hour before dark, from September through the winter, or on a light summer night. Drive slowly, stop where it is safe, stay in the car — a bull can weigh 600 kg and this is a road, not a park. Ask us for that week’s sightings when you check in.

Tårstad, the boat harbourEasy

Park at Bygdehuset Solbakken, Tårstadveien 353, walk west along the county road, then left down the gravel track to the small harbour with its lean-to, benches and fire pans. 730 metres, flat, works with a wheelchair. Bring something to grill and stay for the light on the water.

The summits

Evenes has five proper peaks in the Turlag’s “Topp 5”, and a mountain hut you can sleep in. These are half-day to full-day trips.

StortindenDemanding

The peak above Dragvik. Take the marked trail to Resskvanto first, then turn south for 800 m and up the steep, exposed final climb to the top. Slippery when wet and little to hold on to near the summit, so come down the same way. From Resskvanto you can carry on to Skinnstakk or Strandfjellet, or follow the Panorama trail along the ridge with the whole fjord below you.

NiingshyttaModerate

The Turlag’s own hut at 517 m, open and rentable, with a rowing boat on Niingsvatnet in summer. The short way climbs the old pipeline track — steep but obvious — then flattens past Djupåvatnet to the hut. The long way goes round by Vassbotn and the power station. Book the hut and stay the night: it is the best aurora spot in the municipality.

NiingstrappaBeing built

The big new thing in Evenes. A stone staircase up the mountainside above Bogen, built by Sherpa stone-masons from Nepal — the same crew behind the steps at Reinebringen and Preikestolen. It follows the old pipeline that has run down the hill to Niingen power station for seventy years, and turns the steep, slippery scramble into a proper climb with a view over Bogen and the whole Ofotfjord at every landing. Stage one, from Floget up to Niingsaksla, went into construction in June 2026. Ask us how far they have got; each step carries the name of the person who paid for it.

VassbotnEasy

The far end of Strandvatnet above Bogen, one of the most-visited spots in the whole area and a local daily walk in every season. From the turning circle at Mitthuset it is 2.65 km along the floodlit track to the lean-to and box on the beach; from Niingsveien on the north side, 3 km past the power station. Gentle, family-friendly.

Kvanntokollen, Fisketjønnfjellet, Liakollen, Klubbfjellvatn, Butind, Tverrfjellet, Varden Veggfjellet, Sauen… Every trail has a page with distance, height gain, walking time and GPS coordinates for start and finish. The Turlag’s paper map is sold at YX in Bogen and Joker on Liland.

Cross-country skiing

Marked trail starts all round our properties, groomed by the local clubs when there is snow — usually December to April. Free ski storage in our building. Sorted by distance from Finhaugveien.

Tjeldsund IL grooms an 8-km loop, a children’s loop and a floodlit trail at Ramsund, west of the airport towards the bridge to Tjeldøya. The pin marks the ski area, not one car park — ask locally or check Skisporet.no for the day’s start.

Breistrand ski stadium, north of the airport on the road to Evenskjer: prepared tracks and a loop network, the place to go when you want to ski for a couple of hours without thinking about the route. The pin marks the ski area.

Fjell skistadion at Lavangseidet grendehus, Nedre Trøsemarka 145 — a race-standard stadium used for the regional championships. Woodland skiing rather than open mountain, sheltered on the windy days.

The ski and walking trail up to Kollan above Evenskjer starts from the big car park on the E10 by the village. The pin marks Kollan itself, the goal, with the Sætertinden range behind.

The mountain plateau between Bjerkvik and Bogen: high, open and snow-sure — the tracks here hold long after the coast has gone bare. Start at the car park on the E10 at Trollhøgda; the trail heads south over the marsh and up the ridge. Wide skies, and often the last place to ski in spring.

Grovfjord IL grooms tracks from the car park on the RV829 near Revelvhøgda, north-east towards Astafjorden. Further to drive, but a different landscape: steep sides, a narrow fjord, and few other skiers. The pin marks the ski area.

Before you go. Weather turns fast at 68° north. Take a map, tell someone your route, and add time for children, photographs and stopping to look. Trail details, GPS coordinates and current conditions are on evenes-turlag.no, and the Turlag’s summit boxes each hold a book — sign it, and you have been. Guests at the Tjeldøya cabin get our 40-page hiking and fishing guide with maps, GPS points and licence links; sea fishing in the fjord is free for everyone, and the sea-trout lakes behind the cabin need only a day licence from inatur.no in July and August. We have maps at the apartments and are happy to talk you through any of these.

Evenes Apartments AS is a small Norwegian apartment hotel in Evenes, Northern Norway. We rent out our own apartments at Finhaugveien 3A–9, 2.8 kilometres from Harstad/Narvik Airport, a whole house for groups at Leirosveien 103 from September 2026, and our own cabins on the fjord in Tjeldsund and in the woods at Lavangen. No platform, no call centre — which is exactly why we can answer faster and charge less than a booking site can.
